11th Convention on Biological Diversity in Hyderabad?

Remember the 2012 debacle of Common Wealth Games? Its case against suresh Kalmadi is still a big unsolved question in our country today. He is even barred by High Court from taking part in London Olympics this year that is 2012. Fresh scare to our country is that Hyderabad is all set to host 11th Convention on Biological Diversity of the United Nations in October 2012.

There are just two months to go. This is supposed to be the biggest event the country will be hosting since independence. The event will have more than 8000 delegates coming from 194 countries and Hyderabad is supposed to host this event. Keeping the pride factor aside, we now stand face to face with the reality. Is Hyderabad really in condition to host this event?

The global summit organizers fear that this will turn into a disaster same as CWG in 2010. Reasons? We know them. Acute shortage of water supply, power generation shortage, streets of Hyderabad, poor managerial capacity of the state government and the list continues. The central Ministry of Environment and Forests and the state government bodies which are given with this responsibility to hold a conference are already in a tiff with each other.

A private organization has been given with managerial powers of holding this conference. This decision has disappointed the state government. They feel that the private org will just try to profit its company and not do anything productive for the sake of state. Even the most important route or travel plan isn’t yet decided by the concerned officials. The total budget of this 19 day event is turning out to be 300 to 400 crore.

If at all the government manages to take loan of this much amount for this event, what we ask is, why didn’t the government take such serious steps to improve the situation of the state for the sake of its own people? The other main questions raised are the accommodation facilities for this giant delegation which will come to Hyderabad, the AP Pollution Board’s inefficiency to handle this last minute chaos situation and the absence of awareness among the public.

Instead of conducting awareness camps across the state and make people aware of this event, the officials are busy making up fake presentations to show in the conference. People are expecting the centre to help AP government as this is a mega event for the state’s development. It will help AP build its value in the global scenario. Let us all hope that this event will be a success. If yes, this will take Andhra Pradesh into a whole new level in terms of economy and urbanization.
