Ex-finance minister Pranab Mukherjee won the election and selected as the new President of India. The result was announced after the votes from all the national and state law bodies were counted. Mukherjee comes in at the time when India needs maximum support from the government in the upliftment of national fiscal crisis. Experts believe that Pranab Mukherjee can surely do his job enthusiastically as the situation demands.
Mukherjee (76), is the first presidential candidate who hails from a political party, Indian National Congress. So far the presidents have not been directly related to any party. Being a member of congress, Mukherjee gave an occasion to all the congress leaders across the country to rejoice over his victory. He won over the main opposition leader P. A. Sangama who represents BJP.
He personally thanked the crowd gathered outside his residence after he won the election. He also assured his maximum contribution towards the betterment of the situation in India today. Prime Minister’s position may have an upper hand in Indian constitution; but President has the powers ask the central government to rethink over his decisions. His approval should definitely be considered in certain amendments in law.
An analyst from India’s Centre for Study of Developing Societies said “Mukherjee comes in at the peak time when the state needs drastic changes in the economy and to revive other sinking aspects. He is a fighter and a troubleshooter also”.
Although the political bodies are talking positively about the new president, his performance as finance minister is highly criticized. As it is evident that the country has been going through major fiscal crisis since the past 6 months, Pranab’s activity as a good President is being questioned. Well we can just hope for the better and wait for the future to unfold itself.
