The 11th episode of Satyamev Jayate aired on Star Plus raised a question to the younger generation of India about the treatment of their elders. So far the themes of Satyamev Jayate dealt with critical issues of present day India. Yet another sensitive and stirring issue has been brought to light by Aamir Khan and his team. The episode focused on the issues of old age people who were and still are being abandoned by their children.

It is not just the question of survival of older generation but also about their dignity and self respect. Parents who put in their soul and lives in raising their children are mercilessly abandoned by their children after they grow up. Since the past 5 decades, the emergence of old age homes fuelled their inhumanity towards their own parents.

Some elderly people along with youngsters and social activists joined the show to discuss the problems faced by abandoned parents. In a video clipping telecasted during the show, it can be seen how an old lady was thrown out of her own house by her son. It was after the intervening of police that she could enter her own house. Another sensitive issue raised was the sharing of hard earned wealth by parents with their children. Some may oppose to this idea, but it gave a new idea that parents should share their happiness with their children but not their wealth.

As far as living alone is concerned, the marriage of Mr. Joshi with a Malayali old lady should be the best example to counter this age old myth. Older citizens have equal rights to get married to support each other. Another old lady’s story showcased her motto of “Muh Mai Raam, Haath Mai Kaam” (worship through mouth and work through hands) in old age. It did sound new to Indian viewers and gave fellow old age sufferers a purpose to live for.
