80% cast vote in city Council polls
Eighty per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the elections to the two seats in the Hyderabad local authorities constituency. The elections witnessed active participation from MPs, MLAs, MLCs and corporators, making the result a foregone conclusion for both the Congress and TDP nominees. Voters from MIM turned out in full attendance and exercised their franchise within 90 minutes of the scheduled opening time of 8 am. Of the total 157 voters in the Hyderabad segment, 127 cast their preferential vote. Some of the early voters included MPs K V P Ramchander Rao and Asaduddin Owaisi. All the three candidates Syed Amin Jafri (MIM), M S Prabhakar Rao (Congress) and Y Mallesham (TDP) were present at the GHMC office. But for the confusion in the TDP camp regarding boycott of the polls, the whole exercise went off smoothly. Except for MLC Ibrahim Bin Abdullah Masquati and the lone TDP member from the Secunderabad Cantonment, the remaining elected representatives from TDP stayed away from the election process. The TDP corporators conceded defeat at 2 pm after trying in vain to complain that one of their members, Raja Singh, who has been detained in the Cherlapalli jail, was denied the facility of a postal ballot and that officials were making a mockery of democracy. Hyderabad district election officer and GHMC special commissioner Navin Mittal clarified that due intimation was given to the TDP regarding the matter as the member did not seek permission for a postal ballot within the stipulated time as prescribed in the election rules. More than 50 % of the electors cast their vote before chief minister K Rosaiah and council chairman A Chakrapani turned up at 11.30 am to exercise their franchise. Notable absentees included Union minister Jairam Ramesh, Rajya Sabha members G Sanjeeva Reddy, Nandamuri Harikrishna (TDP), P Madhu (CPM), Syed Aziz Pasha (CPI), G Kishan Reddy (BJP MLA) and MLCs Chokka Ramaiah and P Yadagiri (TDP). Addressing the press, the Hyderabad district election officer said he would examine the issue of MLA T Manemma and MP Dasari Narayan Rao, both from Congress, for using a vehicle to commute till the entrance of the polling booth. He said the chief minister s vehicle was allowed in for security reasons. "Both the ballot boxes were sealed in the presence of the nominees and moved to the strong room," he said.
